Symptomatic reading, surface reading

Thanks to everyone for an incredible conference — my head is still abuzz with all the talks and discussions.   It seems that most of us feel that a strictly symptomatic reading isn’t quite enough, that there needs to be more of a dialectical spectrum going forward.   I wonder if a strategic engagement with other phenomenal registers — the visual field in several of the papers, or jazz in Eastern Europe — might not be a way to introduce some non-reductive (as well as non-recuperative) angled surfaces into our descriptions of the world?
